- General Registration Problems
- In the Registration Box, it says to select a sport or region below, but I do not see a selection box. What's wrong?
It sounds like your security settings are set to "High", and to access the site, we need to drop that one level. This issue would most commonly appear with Internet Explorer. Here's what we need to do:
- In your Internet Explorer browser, click on "Tools". If you don't see the word tools, you can click on the little gear box in the top right corner of the browser. A drop down menu should be displayed.
- Click on Internet Options. This will open a new window.
- On that new window, you will see some tabs along the top such as "General, Security, Privacy etc. Click on Security.
- Now you'll see a section that says "Security for this zone". Does it say "Custom Level" in that section? If it does, then click on the button which says "Default Level". Click on that.
- Now hit the button that says "Apply"
- Close all Internet Explorer windows.
- Now you should be able to re-open Internet Explorer and access the site.
- I click to "Accept" the Privacy Policy and nothing happens. What can I do?
This is basically the same issue as above and should only manifest itself if you clicked the Submit form the New Registration box without trying to select a sport. It sounds like your security settings are set to "High", and to access the site, we need to drop that one level.
This is an infrequent occurrence and our technical personnel are working on it. In the interim, please call into Helpdesk Support (see below) and one of our agents will be happy to help you out by creating your profile on the system for you.
- General Registration Questions
If you experience trouble with system registration, please confirm the following:
- You have selected the appropriate sport or region selections
- You have confirmed your desire to associate your profile with the appropriate sport or region selections
- You have created a username
- You have entered and confirmed your password (passwords are case sensitive)
- All fields identified by a red exclamation mark have been completed
- You are completely typing your entries. Auto fill type selections (where your computer has remembered your previous entries in other registration programs) will not correctly work with all different Internet browser types
- You clicked on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the registration page
- I am having trouble logging in – What may be wrong?
If you experience trouble logging in to the system, please confirm the following:
You are entering your username exactly as entered when you completed the registration process
You are entering your password exactly as entered when you completed the registration process. Remember, passwords are case sensitive. If you originally entered a password using all capital letters, all small letters, or a combination of both, the entry on login must match.
If you created your username with any spaces, those spaces may have been removed by our systems. Please try to re-enter your username and password with no spaces.
- I can't remember my username or password. How do I retrieve them?
If you have forgotten your password, you may change it in the following manner:
- Click on the button within the login box labeled "I've Forgotten My Password"
- Enter your username
- The question you entered on registration will now be displayed. You must answer the question exactly as the answer was entered on registration.
- If the answer entered is correct, your password will be displayed
If you have forgotten your username:
- Click on the button within the login box labeled "I've Forgotten My Password"
- Enter your First Name
- Enter your Last Name
- Enter your Birth Date
- Click "Submit"
- Your username will be displayed. Please note, once created during registration, a username cannot be changed.
- I can't advance from one module to the next – What's wrong?
If you experience difficulties advancing from one module to the next, there are four possible reasons we have identified, the first of which is you have a pop-up blocker installed and turned on:
- You may have Pop-Up Blockers turned on in your computer. There could be multiple levels of pop-up blockers active.
Step 1 - Internet Explorer – Open Internet Explorer and enter the address you use to access the Respect in Sport program. When you clicked the button, chances are a yellowish bar appeared near the top of the window, just below the menus that says "Pop-Up blocked". Click on that bar and then select "Always allow pop-ups from the identified site". Now you should be in good shape. Let's give it a try.
Step 1 - Firefox - Open Internet Explorer and enter the address you use to access the Respect in Sport program. When you clicked the button, chances are a yellowish bar appeared near the top of the window, just below the menus that says "Firefox prevented this site from opening a popup window", and then beside that there should be a button labeled "Options". Click on Options and then select "Allow pop-ups for the identified site". Now you should be in good shape. Let's give it a try.
Step 1 – Safari – Open Safari. Click on the Safari Menu (the word Safari) if on a Mac or Edit if on a PC. Uncheck Block Popup Window.
If you still have an issue:
Have you installed any extra Internet toolbars such as the Google or Yahoo tool bars?
Step 2 - If Google Toolbar - On the Google toolbar, you will see a section that says a number followed by the words "popups blocked". Click on that and you can then tell it to allow pop-ups from this site. So, let's give it a try again.
Step 2 - If Yahoo Toolbar - Click on the Pop-Up Blocker menu. That icon looks like a little folder and it should be immediately to the left of the icon that looks like a little crosshair target. Next, you are probably seeing a checkmark beside "Enable Pop-Up Blocker". Click on that checkmark. That will remove the checkmark and your pop-up blocker will now be turned off. So, let's give it a try again.
Step 2 - If Ask Toolbar – Click on the Popswatter button on the Ask Toolbar, and then select "Disable Popswatter" from the pull-down menu. Now you should be good to go, so let's give it a try.
Step 3 – Norton Antivirus. We need to open Norton, so click on that. Is that open? Okay, on the main Norton window, does it say "Anti-Spam" or "Ad Blocking". See solution 3a or 3b depending on what you see.
Step 3a – Anti-Spam. Click on Anti-Spam. Next click on Ad-Blocking and select Turn-Off, and lastly Pop-Up blocking and select Turn Off. You may want to turn these back on later, so just repeat this procedure after you've completed the program.
Step 3a – Ad-Blocking. Double click on Ad Blocking. Next, uncheck Ad Blocking, uncheck Pop-up Window Blocking and then click on OK.
Step 4 – McAfee. There's no real easy way to turn off the pop-up blocker in McAfee, but you can temporarily defeat it. What you need to do when you launch a section, or hit the continue button to advance from one section to the next is to hold down the Control key (ctrl) on your keyboard at the same time you click on the button.
- Your Internet connection was temporarily interrupted.
This can result in the program temporarily experience loss of communication which can result in difficulties advancing. In most cases, logging out of the program, closing you Internet browser, and then logging back in will rectify this issue. If you experience trouble logging back in to the system, there is a good chance you are still experiencing issues with your Internet connection.
- The installation and operation of the Adobe Flash program has experienced partial failure.
Adobe Flash is typically a very stable and effective program, however we have previously experienced issues related to the Adobe Flash program. A simple re-installation of this free program has generally resolved these issues. To download and reinstall the free Adobe Flash program, please go here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
- The security settings on your Internet Browser or computer firewall are set to high.
The Respect in Sport program makes use of "Session Cookies" which are placed on your computer while you are completing the Respect in Sport program, and then deleted when your Internet browser is closed. If your security settings are set too high, these session cookies cannot be loaded on your computer. Session cookies require the lowest level of Internet browser security. Generally a setting of Medium will provide the appropriate level of security for your computer and still allow the use of session cookies.
- Your computer files may be "holding" information from an older or possibly corrupt version of the program or program page.
This information is held in your system "cache" or Temporary Internet Files. Frequently, the fastest and simplest fix for most problems is clearing your system cache. Steps for clearing your cache differ depending on the version and type of the internet browser you are using.
- In Firefox, the task can usually be done by clicking on the "Tools" menu item at the top of the browser and then clicking on "Options...". This should open up the options window. Here you should select the "Privacy" icon, and then the "Cache" tab. Then click on the "Clear Cache Now" button. Then click the "Ok" button to close the window.
- In Internet Explorer, for most cases you can click on the "Tools" menu item and then click the "Internet Options..." menu item. This should pop up the Internet Options window. Click the "General" tab and then click the "Delete Files..." button inside the "Temporary Internet Files" section. This should pop up another window. Click "Ok". This second pop up window should close. Click "Ok" again to close the Internet Options window.
- In Safari, the task can usually be done by clicking the "Safari" menu item and then clicking "Empty Cache..."
- It takes a long time to load each section of the program – Can I fix that?
Respect in Sport programs are multi-media based which are by nature, large files. The length of time required to download files depends on the following:
- The speed of your Internet connection (high speed (fast) or dial-up (slow))
- The amount of activity on your Internet connection
- Whether your Internet connection is shared or dedicated
If you have High–Speed Internet access and experience slower download times than you would expect:
- Ensure no other programs on your computer are using the Internet (such as email or music and video sharing or downloading programs)
- Close all programs not related to Respect in Sport such as email, Instant Messaging, Automatic Updates etc.
- Ensure you are not sharing your Internet connection
If you have Dial-Up Internet access and experience slower download times than you would expect:
- Close all programs not related to Respect in Sport such as email, Instant Messaging, Automatic Updates etc.
- Remember, dial-up access will by nature be slower for program downloads, but once downloaded will operate the same as that for non dial-up users.
Many steps have been taken to increase the speed of program download. Examples of this include:
- Offering self-detecting high bandwidth/low bandwidth versions of the program.
- Assembling the program in small components to minimize individual file sizes.
- Temporarily loading content into system cache through the use of session cookies which are automatically deleted from computers when the Internet Browser is closed.
- Pre-loading all content to ensure once it has been downloaded, all users receive the same program experience.
- The system works well some times, and not well at others – What can I do?
The Respect in Sport program has been crafted to work with most common consumer-based computers, Internet browsers and free, downloadable programs. If you are experiencing general issues with the program, there is a good chance something in our program is not compatible with your system, or your system is not operating at peak efficiency.
These HELP files have been structured to assist with the resolution to the most common issues identified with programs of this type. Please review these help files to identify if your specific issue is mentioned. If it is, the most common resolution to these types of issues will be explained. If you cannot find an adequate resolution to your specific issue, please contact our helpdesk.
Quick Notes:
- Ensure no other programs on your computer are operating or using the Internet (such as email or music and video sharing or downloading programs)
- Close all programs not related to Respect in Sport such as email, Instant Messaging, Automatic Updates etc.
- Ensure you are not sharing your Internet connection
- Ensure you do not have other open programs operating which can reduce the efficiency of your computers operation and utilize valuable memory.
Generally, the first step to resolving any computer related issue is to reboot the computer. Rebooting any computer will frequently reset and reload programs which have begun to operate at a lower efficiency.
- I can't see the handouts – How can I see them?
Respect in Sport documents made available through this program are provided in a pdf format. PDF formatted documents minimize the file size and thus speed up the download time required to access the document. To view these documents, you must have the Adobe Reader which is available as a free download from Adobe.
- I can't print my certificate – What can I do?
In general, if you experience issues printing a certificate, it is a local computer problem. For example, you may not have a printer connected to your computer, or an alternate printer than the one you is selected by default. To identify if the issue you are experiencing is related to Respect in Sport, or if it is a local computer issue, try printing something other than a Respect in Sport document. Ideally choose a document which can be found on your computer. If you are not able to print this non Respect in Sport document, the trouble is a local computer issue. If you are able to print the non Respect in Sport document, the trouble you are experiencing is either related to the Respect in Sport program or to your Internet Browser.
If you experience trouble printing your certificate:
- Ensure you have completed all components of the Respect in Sport program (including the survey)
- Open the certificate and ensure a number has been stamped on it. If the certificate says RiS-Null, please try to resubmit the survey. If you cannot re-access the survey, please contact the Respect in Sport Help Desk.
- If I change from one language to the other, do I have to start over?
The Respect in Sport program will track your advancement through the program regardless of the selected language. On original access to the program, you are requested to choose the language desired for registration. Once registered and in the program, you may switch from one language to the other as desired. Your progress through the program will be tracked as if you had stayed simply in a single language.
- I coach in more than one sport – Do I have to take the course for every sport?
Respect in Sport has been crafted to allow you to cross reference your user information and Respect in Sport certification number between sports or regions within the same implementation. For example, if you are accessing Respect in Sport through a provincial implementation which includes many different sports, once you have achieved certification, you may apply that certification number to the other desired sports. To provide an example:
- You originally registered yourself in the sport of Football
- You completed your certification and have been issued a certification number
- You wish to apply that certification number to the sport of Broomball
- You also wish to apply that certification number to the sport of skiing
Once certified, you may apply your certification number to as many sports or regions as required through the following steps:
- From the Main Module selection page (Home) click on the Edit Profile button
- Click on "Add Additional Sports" or "Add Additional Regions"
- From the drop down selection box, choose the appropriate sport or region (one at a time). Making a selection will close the drop down selection box.
- You will be required to check the box to associate with the desired sport or region
- Once you have applied your certification number to the chosen sports, your name and number will be provided to the administrator for each sport or region
- Am I supposed to take Respect in Sport?
This is a question which can NOT be answered by the Respect in Sport Help Desk support team.
To find out if you are required to take the Respect in Sport program, please consult with your club, sport organization or sport consultant. These identified personnel will provide the identified requirements regarding who needs to complete the Respect in Sport certification number.
- I have seen/been a target of abuse/harassment/bullying/neglect – Who do I call?
If you have witnessed or been the target of abuse/harassment/bullying or neglect, you are obligated to report it. By reporting, you are protecting yourself and other potential victims.
To identify whom you should report the incident to consult the handouts section of the Respect in Sport program.
Certain implementations of the Respect in Sport program have included a toll-free support line. If the implementation of Respect in Sport you access has included this service, the toll-free number will be identified beside a Red Cross logo directly above the module access buttons.
If the implementation of the Respect in Sport program you access has not included this service, consult the handouts section of the Respect in Sport program or consult the Blue Pages of your telephone book for the appropriate agency.
In the case of an emergency, dial 911 without delay.
